Joanne Jefferson is a fictional character from the smash-hit Broadway musical and film adaptation RENT. Though one of the main characters, Joanne, along with Benny, does not sing/speak as often as the other members of the ensemble cast.
Originally played by Fredi Walker, Tracie Thoms took on the role of Joanne in the RENT movie. In both the movie and in the Broadway show, Joanne is depicted as a high-strung, high-class Lesbian lawyer, whose partner is the wild and unpredictable Maureen Johnson, Mark's former girlfriend. In both adaptations, Joanne fights constantly with her love interest, even during their engagement party (in movie version only). By the end of the story, especially after Angel's death, the couple reunites and all is well once again.
